Election manipulation in Berlin? Bröchler warns of acute danger!
Berlin's state election manager Stephan Bröchler has urged the rising risk of election manipulations. On the occasion of the recent incidents in Saxony, where over 100 postal selection lists were manipulated, Bröchler explained that these attempts had to be taken seriously. He emphasized that a similar incident was always possible in Berlin and called for vigilance: "That could have happened in Berlin," he told the German Press Agency.
In the Saxon capital of Dresden, the manipulated ballot papers were declared invalid in favor of the right -wing extremist group. Here, unknown perpetrators covered the crosses already set and set their own. The police have already initiated investigations and arrested a 44-year-old for suspected election failure. According to Bröchler, this represents a new dimension of the threat to democracy.
attack on democracy seriously
Bröchler observes various worrying developments that endanger the integrity of the elections and political participation. In addition to the attempts to fake the election, he also sees attacks on politicians and offices of parties as alarming. He expressed himself skeptically about the state of the political landscape: "Democracy lives from the fact that you can get politically committed to violence and fear and that you have confidence in the election organization."
These fears can lead to a withdrawal from political participation. Bröchler explained that manipulating voices is a criminal offense that can be punished with high punishments, including imprisonment of up to five years. "And I think that's really the case. So if you attack democracy, you have to be punished," he added
The upcoming elections, including the Bundestag election 2025, make it necessary for the electoral authorities to remain particularly vigilant. Bröchler announced that one wanted to set special accents both in communication and in the training of the election workers to ensure that everyone involved is sensitized to possible manipulation attempts. "It is all the more important that we really have a very awake eye on it," he emphasized.
