Wagenknecht grants misjudgment on Putin in the Ukraine conflict
In a current turn, Sahra Wagenknecht, the top candidate of the newly founded BSW (citizens of social welfare), has publicly admitted an incorrect assessment regarding the Ukraine crisis. According to Berlin Live she had declared four days before the Russian attack on February 24, 2022 that Russia was not interested in the invasion of Ukraine. Her assessment turned out to be wrong because Putin attacked Ukraine shortly afterwards. In an interview with ZDF,Wagenknecht emphasized that she assumed that the Russian troops were only employed in military exercises. She explained: "I was also wrong at the time. I thought it was a threatening gesture." In addition, she indicated that her misjudgment of information from the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) was influenced, who also falsely assumed that it was only an exercise. Nevertheless, Wagenknecht remains that the causes of the Ukraine war in the provocative policy of the West, especially NATO, should be found, as well as the Politik/ukraine-kriega-waraknechknechknechknechknecht-fei-zu-zu-zu-aggression-ae533f7a-40d-913d6d63dc594"> Spiegel.
Wagenknecht confirmed her demand that Germany should play a mediating role in the conflict and that a diplomatic solution for the Ukraine war must be interested. This position includes the desire to promote dialogue and negotiations in order to quickly end military conflicts. Despite the criticism of her policy, Wagenknecht remains steadfast and does not deny that the geopolitical tensions and illegitimate aggression in Russia are great challenges in this complex situation.
