Waffen rest between Ukraine and Russia: hope or illusion?
Berlin is currently intensifying the efforts to make a new military package for Ukraine. A government representative expressed hope of an agreement, while Ukraine and Russia have temporarily agreed to hire attacks on energy systems. These developments were told by President Wolodymyr Selenskyj after a phone call to US President Donald Trump, who in turn is optimistic about the chances of a ceasefire. The conversation served to compare the wishes and needs of both sides. Trump and his deputy Vance made massive allegations against Russia three weeks ago in a meeting in the White House. In the past week, Trump also made calls with Russia's head of state Vladimir Putin.
During the phone call,Putin demanded that arms deliveries to Ukraine have to be set for permanent peace. Trump suggested that the United States could take responsibility for the power plants in Ukraine for security reasons. In the meantime, however, the attacks in the war zones continue.
Situation of the energy infrastructure
In a press conference with Finland President Alexander Stubb,Ukrainian President Selenskyj said that Russia was not willing to end the war and asked the United States to monitor the agreed ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, especially with regard to energy systems. The situation has developed dramatically; Russian attacks have significantly impaired energy supply, traffic and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.
Selenskyj expressed hope of compliance with the partial ceasefire, but sees no serious will to end the war in Russia. Russia, on the other hand, accuses Ukraine of sabotaging the ceasefire. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Kropotkinskaja oil pumping station in southern Russia was damaged in an attack, shortly after a 30-day moratorium for attacks on energy infrastructure was agreed.
military aids and international reactions
The federal government, meanwhile, is planning additional military aids for Ukraine in the amount of around three billion euros. Federal Minister of Finance Jörg Kukies will inform the Bundestag's budget committee about this aid, which, however, require the committee of the committee. In addition, unscheduled commitment authorizations of over 8.252 billion euros are planned for the Ukrainian military aid from 2026 to 2029.
CDU external expert Roderich Kiesewetter expressed concerns about the agreement between Trump and Putin, who benefits Russia. In his opinion, this agreement, which provides for a temporary non -aggression phase for energy systems, does not lead to positive results for Ukraine, the energy infrastructure of which is already badly damaged. Despite these challenges, Ukraine recently successfully attacked Russian refineries.
The reactions to the planned military aids and the ceasefire show how tense the situation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine remains. Kiev accepted the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire and a corresponding agreement on raw materials. The reaction of the Kremlin on this remains unclear so far, whereby Russia continues to carry out rocket attacks.
At the international level, the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Council President António Costa expressed their satisfaction and the proposal for ceasefire. The national security advisor of the USA, Mike Waltz, also reported concrete proposals for the end of the war, whereby responsibility is now in Russia.
