Vitamin D deficiency in Hamburg: Who has to act now!

In Hamburg, the topic of vitamin D deficiency is on everyone's lips! While people can breathe south of Berlin, the Northern Lights see red! Dr. Matthias Riedl emphasizes that many people suffer from a deficiency, especially in northern regions, since the sun shines less frequently and food intake is not sufficient. It is alarming that children, adolescents, pregnant women and the elderly are particularly affected. So who is considered a risk group? Children up to the age of 18 should serve to prevent rachitis, while the over 75-year-olds should urgently have their vitamin D level measured in order to reduce the risk of death. Even pregnant women are at risk, which can result in complications at birth.

Did you know that overweight people also often suffer from a deficiency? With a vitamin D level of less than 12 nanograms per milliliter, the highest willingness to alert is required! Dr. Riedl advises to have the value tested at the end of winter and warns of overdoses: too much vitamin D can lead to kidney damage. The solution? Regular tests at the doctor and targeted supplementation for those affected! Some foods such as fish, liver and eggs can also help, but these alone often are not enough to stabilize the vitamin D level.
