The first weekend in August once again brings heavy travel on Germany's highways. Above all, those who have not yet started their vacation are now on their way. Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria are particularly affected. At the same time, return travel is also increasing strongly, since vacationers from Bremen, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Scandinavia already end their vacation.

The best days for travel

For everyone who is flexible, it is advisable to start during the week. Tuesday and Wednesday offer the best travel options because there is less traffic on the streets on these days. Forced stops in which the lanes are reduced or very long can be expected, especially on highway construction sites. Many of these construction sites remain in operation even during the summer trip.

The highways with the greatest risk of traffic jams are:

congestion problems abroad

The highways are also extremely overloaded abroad. Both vacationers and returnees are equally affected. In particular, bottlenecks can be expected on the routes to Tauern, Fernpass, Inntal, Brenner, Phyrn, Karawanken and Gotthard as well as the long -distance streets to the Italian, French and Croatian coasts. You should also plan a lot of time on the long -distance streets to Scandinavia, Poland and the Netherlands.

delays in border controls

At some German borders, border controls are part of everyday life. Especially when entering Austria, there have been increased controls from the German side for years. But also at the borders to Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland is increasingly checked. This can take up to 60 minutes. If you travel to Greece or Turkey or return from there, you should count on stays of several hours. Delays should also be scheduled on the trip to France, since increased controls at the Franco-German border crossings take place due to the Olympic Games. The summer games in Paris last from July 26th to August 11th.
