Transport chaos threatens: Elsenbrücke in Berlin ensures traffic jams!

A large traffic project in Berlin takes shape: The extension of the A100 motorway to Treptower Park is to be completed by the end of 2024. This construction project is one of the most expensive road construction projects in Germany and is estimated with costs of up to 700 million euros, as reported Developmentstadt.de So far it is still undecided how future traffic can be mastered via the provisional Elsenbrücke, which currently only offers limited capacities and contains the risk of constant traffic jams.

complex construction work under direct pressure

The work on the A100 has been running for almost ten years, but there are often delays in terms of commissioning the new section between Neuköllner Grenzallee and Treptower Park. The construction site also includes the new construction of the Elsenbrücke, which had to be torn down due to a crack in the concrete. Currently the traffic runs over a makeshift bridge, which, however, only offers limited traces, which, according to Traffic chaos could lead as soon as the new highway is opened without the bridge construction work being completed. The first new half of the bridge could not be accessible before the second half of 2025, while traffic on the makeshift bridge can only be handled to a limited extent.

The A100 is also expanded in an eastern direction, whereby it is planned to lead the highway through a tunnel under the Spree. This decision will probably be crucial for the capacity of the Elsenbrücke and the associated traffic. At the moment there are still fundamental feasibility examinations that should clarify whether a tunnel or a bridge represents the better solution. Autobahn GmbH is currently investigating various construction processes, while the costs for the 17th construction phase could probably increase to 1.5 to 2 billion euros, according to the experts.
