Traffic in Berlin Mitte: First Kiezblock is about to be completed - Pollers should contain through traffic in residential areas
In the Mitte district of Berlin, the first neighborhood block is about to complete it. At the end of July, the street office will set up a number of bollards at the Bellermannstrasse and Stettiner Straße intersection in Wedding, as traffic councilor Almut Neumann (Greens) reports. In August the last diagonal lock will follow at the Grüntalerstraße and Bellermannstraße.
The idea for the so -called Kiezblocks comes from Barcelona and aims to keep through traffic from residential areas. Motorists often use: the neighborhood as a abbreviation in the inside when traffic jams occur on the main roads. The cars are redirected by diagonal barriers at the crossings. Nevertheless, all houses remain accessible by car.
In the Bellermannkiez, a total of five such bollards will be created. If necessary, the police, fire brigade and city cleaning can remove them. Pedestrians: Inside and cyclists: Inside, they are not an obstacle. In addition, new green spaces, seating and play options are to be created as part of the project, for example on Eulerplatz, which the residents can help shape.
"With the first neighborhood block in Mitte we brought traffic calm to Bellermannkiez," says city councilor Neumann. "It is now more secure and more pleasant for people who are on foot or by bike."
Overall, the Mitte district plans to set up 12 neighborhood blocks within five years. The CDU and FDP in the district express criticism of this project. The CDU sees this a disability for car traffic, while the FDP has repeatedly noted that the traffic is only shifted to other areas by diversion.
