inflation in Brandenburg higher than in Berlin

Consumer prices in Brandenburg have increased compared to Berlin, although the Berliners earn an average of 9,000 euros more per year. This trend continued in July.

Last year the Berliners earned an average of 44,154 euros, while the Brandenburgers earned only 35,150 euros. Nevertheless, consumer prices in the surrounding area have increased more in the past two years than in the capital. This difference became clear in July.

The prices in Brandenburg rose by 6.7 percent compared to the previous year, while in Berlin they only rose by 6.1 percent in Berlin. This affects various areas of life such as food, rent or gasoline. The joint statistical state office has determined these differences.

Here are some examples of the differences in consumer prices between Berlin and Brandenburg:

  • gas became 4.2 percent cheaper in Berlin, while it became 16.5 percent more expensive in Brandenburg.
  • vegetables rose by 15 percent in Berlin, while it was 18.2 percent more expensive in Brandenburg.
  • potatoes became 12.4 percent more expensive in Berlin, while the price increase in Brandenburg was 33.3 percent.
  • in hotels and restaurants, prices in Berlin rose by 5.7 percent and 8.9 percent in Brandenburg.

When entire product groups are cheaper, prices in the capital decrease more than in the surrounding area. For example, food oil in Berlin became 18.8 percent cheaper, while it was only 11.8 percent cheaper in Brandenburg. Cucumber became 7.1 percent cheaper in Berlin, while the price drop in Brandenburg was 4.6 percent. In the case of butter, the price drop in Berlin was 28.7 percent and in Brandenburg 26.9 percent.

Compared to 2020, the prices for food and drinks in Brandenburg rose by 33 percent in July, while the increase in Berlin was 30 percent. The highest inflation was recorded in the energy prices. Only the costs for the telephone and the Internet remained at the stand of three years ago. In no area has life cheaper compared to 2020.

The statisticians cannot provide an explanation for the differently strong inflation in the two neighboring countries. A small consolation for the more affected Brandenburgers, however, is that the costs for apartments, building and property prices in the surrounding area are significantly below that of the capital.
