Velocity Berlin paused: Cycling race for 2025 and 2026!
In Berlin there will be no Velocity cycling event in the next two years. The organizer SCC has decided to suspend the popular event for 2025 and 2026. This was announced by SCC managing director Jürgen Lock in today's press release. He explained that the organization will now evaluate the enormous costs of safety and road closures. Already this year the event recorded a record with 6,680 participants, which makes the decision all the more surprising, such as rbb24 reported.
high costs and uncertainties
The Velocity, which was launched in 2008 as a Velothon, has already been affected by challenges in recent years. In 2019, the event was based on the license allocation due to tensions, and the premiere of the renamed edition had to be postponed twice because of the corona pandemic. The last three editions between 2022 and 2024, which despite all the difficulties were extremely popular with number of participants between 6,000 and 7,000, could not build on the record figures from 2012 when over 12,000 cyclists drove through the streets of Berlin. Radsport-News described that additional attractiveness was created by a UCI.1.1 race, which has not been taking place since 2016.
The decision to break leaves many questions open. Lock emphasized that the SCC would like to search for solutions to make the event realizable again in the future without endangering the interests of the city. The cancellation of the velocity marks never for existent times for the popular cycling event, and the hope remains that there can soon be a return in the usual form, the financial situation should stabilize.
