strong storm front brings chaos over Berlin and Brandenburg

An unusually strong storm front moved over Berlin and Brandenburg on Wednesday afternoon and caused considerable devastation. The German Weather Service published an official severe weather warning that asked the citizens to take precautions.

The storm surprised many residents when the capital hit the capital with heavy rain, wind gusts and huge thunderstorms. In Brandenburg, the storm low in the early afternoon brought life to a standstill when it moved to Poland.

fire brigade in continuous use

The local fire brigade had their hands full to take numerous emergency calls and provide help. From flooded cellars to broken branches that flew through the area, the location was extremely tense. Streets and intersections were under water, which led to traffic disruptions.

A particularly scary scenario took place at Friedrichstrasse underground station when water entered the track bed through the ventilation shafts. Videos showed how the rain even flocked to an S-Bahn train, which led to worrying scenes.

storm damage remain limited

Fortunately, despite the intensity of the storm, the damage remained relatively low, as the fire brigade confirmed. The storm quickly moved across Berlin and left only occasionally damage to buildings and infrastructure.

In order to prevent possible further damage, the Berlin fire brigade mobilized additional volunteer fire departments and published online behavioral information for the population.

more storms to be expected at night

The German Weather Service warned of further storms in the evening and at night. Heavy rains and gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour were predicted, especially for the Potsdam area and the Havelland.

On Thursday, showers and thunderstorms could occur again, whereby the risk of storm should be decreased during the day, according to the DWD. Nevertheless, the residents of the region should remain vigilant and prepare for changeable weather.

The weekend continues to promise summer temperatures just below 30 degrees, accompanied by occasional rain showers and thunderstorms. It remains advisable to watch the warnings of the German Weather Service carefully in order to prepare for possible storms in good time.
