The encounter ended in a 1-1 draw, which was a mixed bag for the Union women, who were making their league debut. Union Berlin showed a strong performance throughout the game and initiated a total of 27 shots on goal, while Nuremberg only managed 6 shots.
Union remained dominant in the first half and scored their first Bundesliga goal in the 41st minute with a hand penalty from Lisa Heiseler. Heiseler was previously named Union's Footballer of the Year 2025 and was also the outstanding player of the day. Unfortunately, the Berliners were unable to maintain the lead over time. Selma Licina from Nuremberg equalized in the 90th minute and secured a point for her team. In total, around 11,000 spectators were present in the An der Alten Försterei stadium to watch the exciting duel.

Despite the unfortunate turn of events in the final phase of the game, the Union players showed a remarkable performance. With 15 corners and a number of top-class chances in the second half, Union could have extended their lead, but the hoped-for 2-0 failed to materialise. After the game, Heiseler expressed her disappointment with the final result, while Licina highlighted the point as a success for Nuremberg.
The kick-off on a Sunday evening was seen as unfortunate by fans as the summer holidays had just ended. To brighten the evening for the young fans, Union handed out school bags with surprises and letters of apology for teachers.
Growth of the women's Bundesliga
The women's Bundesliga has experienced positive development in recent seasons and will be expanded from twelve to 14 teams in the coming season. According to a season report from the DFB recorded the league records records in finances, attendance and reach. Despite these positive figures, profitability remains a challenge, as the average negative season result per club is around 1.9 million euros. Nevertheless, the emerging league's revenues have increased in recent years.
On average, 2,876 spectators saw a game, which led to a record level of gaming revenue of 370,000 euros per club. DFB Vice President Sabine Mammitzsch emphasized that the overall development is going in the right direction, even if the clubs are not yet profitable.
With the rise of women's football and a clear focus on professionalization, it is hoped that future games like Union Berlin's against Nuremberg will attract even more spectators and the league will continue to grow.
