Uni-Kiez conflict: Container village vs. Research building
The planned establishment of a container village for 260 refugees on an undeveloped area on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem ensures controversy. Resistance is particularly stirring in the Free University, since the university actually wants to build a building for teaching and research. The refugee coordinator of Berlin, Albrecht Broemme, has informed the university that he wants to temporarily accommodate refugees there, which is rejected by the university. The university emphasizes that it is fundamentally willing to support refugee people within the scope of their possibilities, but will need the property from 2023 for its own construction projects.
The university feels over and was surprised by the Senate plans. A temporary use for refugees on the site is considered not feasible by the university. It is pointed out that there are 92 buildings in the immediate vicinity of the Thielallee location that have been empty for some time and could be used for the accommodation of refugees.
The discussion about the construction of the container village on the universe area is part of the decision of the Senate at the end of March to build 16 other container villages in Berlin. This measure shows the tense situation with regard to the accommodation of refugees in the city. The planned locations mainly concentrate on the eastern part of the city, which leads to the fact that the imbalance in the distribution increases. Despite the need for other accommodations, resistance to refugee accommodation in some districts is a hurdle, as in the case of the Free University of Berlin.
