Uni Berlin under pressure: Container village instead of new building (100 characters)

The property on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem is to be converted into a container village for 260 refugees, which is based on resistance. The Free University (FU) is concerned because it actually wants to build a building for teaching and research. FU President Günter Ziegler stated that they had learned from the Senate plans from the newspaper without the university management.

The FU has already supported the short -term accommodation of refugees in the past. However, there are currently no other areas available because construction measures are urgently pending. The university proposed to use empty buildings of the Federal Real Estate Agency as an alternative, since these have already been used for the accommodation of refugees.

The 16 additional container villages, which were decided by the Senate at the end of March, should help to improve the lack of accommodation of refugees. However, it turns out that further locations are necessary because the need for living space for refugees is high. The planned locations mainly concentrate in the eastern part of the city, which reinforces the imbalance in the distribution of refugees.

During the Senate, solutions to accommodate refugees, resistance to such projects in wealthy quarters, as well as at the FU, meets criticism and ridicule on the net. Some users are surprised that an institution, which is considered to be the cosmopolitan, shows resistance to the accommodation of refugees and question the incongruity of this behavior with the propagated values of the university.
