University of Berlin rejects container village

The property on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem with an area of ​​around 4000 to 5000 square meters is currently serving as a parking lot. The plans of the Senate to build a container village for 260 refugees on this fallow uni -lying uni -lying unigain area have caused resistance, especially at the Free University. The President of the FU, Günter Ziegler, was outraged that the Senate plans were published without the consent of the university management. In the past, the university has already taken measures to support refugee people, including providing temporary emergency accommodation for around 200 adults and children. Despite the willingness to help, the university emphasizes that it urgently needs the property from 2023 for its own construction projects.

The special representative for refugee questions at the Senate, Albrecht Broemme, defends the plans to build the container village and emphasize that refugees can be accommodated on the fallow property, as long as it is not used otherwise. He demands a temporal statement from the FU for the start of construction of the planned building. Furthermore, 16 other container villages were decided by the Senate at the end of March to counter the acute lack of living space for refugees in Berlin.

The planned locations for the container villages are mainly in the eastern part of the city, whereby the distribution leads to further inequality. The Pankow district, which already houses a high number of refugees, will have to accept additional residents. Despite the need for further accommodations for refugees, the plans encounter resistance, especially in districts that are considered to be raised. The discussion about the accommodation of refugees on the university area in Steglitz-Zehlendorf has caused mockery and criticism online, whereby the FU is targeted for its resistance against the planned use of the property.
