UN Convention on the Rights of Disabilities in Germany: 15 years after entry into force there is still a need for action

UN Convention on the Rights of Disabilities in Germany: 15 years after entry into force there is still a need for action

On March 26, 2009, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons in Germany came into force. With the ratification of this international law contract, the Federal Republic of Germany has committed to strengthen the rights of people with disabilities and to enable them to participate equally in social life. However, the CEO of the Social Association of Germany (SOVD), Michaela Engelmeier, notes that too little has been done so far. People with disabilities and their relatives still fight to attend daycare centers and schools together with children without disabilities. In addition, many people with disabilities still live in special facilities and many of them have no regular work, even though they are well trained and qualified.

This lack of implementation of the equal participation of people with disabilities was sharply criticized by the United Nations in Geneva in summer. It became clear that the federal government, the states and municipalities of their self -declared commitment were not sufficient. Engelmeier therefore demands that the concerns of people with disabilities are taken into account and the right to equal participation is guaranteed for everyone.

As a positive example of the equal participation of people with disabilities, Heike Heubach is mentioned to the Bundestag. Heubach, which is deaf, is committed to the topic of affordable living space. Engemeier welcomes this milestone and emphasizes that people like Heubach send an important sign of equality for people with disabilities.

The most important data on the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabilities are summarized in the following table:

date event
26. March 2009 UN Convention on the Rights of Disabilities comes into force in Germany
summer 2024 united nations criticize a lack of implementation of the equal participation of people with disabilities in Germany
2024 Heike Heubach is the first deaf to the Bundestag

This SOVD press release makes it clear that Germany has not yet sufficiently did the equal participation of people with disabilities. The United Nations' criticism emphasizes the need to take more attention to the concerns of people with disabilities and to enable them to participate in social life without restriction. The move of Heike Heubach to the Bundestag, on the other hand, symbolizes a positive step towards equality. It remains to be seen whether further measures are taken to strengthen the rights of people with disabilities in Germany and to improve their participation.
