Environmentally friendly streets: reveal new measures to maintain tree maintenance in Berlin

The Ruhlsdorfer Straße in Berlin is a prime example of many streets in the city where the trees are under pressure. The roots of the trees need more space in order to be able to continue to grow healthily. This situation means that the sidewalks are raised, bike paths are bumpy and the stability of the streets is affected. The usual solution in such cases would be to saw the ingrown tree roots, which almost always leads to the tree to get the street infrastructure.

An alternative measure is now being implemented on Ruhlsdorfer Straße to maintain the trees. By expanding the tree slices, the roots gave more space, which enables them to thrive healthy. Another positive effect of this measure is to seal areas to seep away more rainwater. This contributes to the long -term irrigation of the trees, even during dry periods. In addition, the infiltration relieves the sewage system for heavy rain by creating special green gullies to temporarily collect the water.

In the course of this renovation, 37 parking spaces are removed on Ruhlsdorfer Straße to obtain eight trees that would otherwise have to be felled. This not only improves the situation for the existing trees, but also for the surrounding vegetation, such as the Japanese mustache trees. You benefit from the better water supply and air supply, which leads to increased resistance to drought.

The entire project is extensively monitored to gain knowledge for similar measures. Train tests are carried out on the trees to check their stability and floor sensors monitor moisture development in the soil. The results of these examinations are used for future projects. The planting of the newly sealed areas is financed by nature conservation compensation.

District City Councilor Annika Gerold emphasizes the importance of these conversion measures: "The expansion of the tree slices in Ruhlsdorfer Straße is an important step to get the city trees. Healthy trees contribute to a pleasant urban climate, promote biodiversity and donations." These measures contribute to the improvement of rainwater management and contribute to cooling down the environment.

historical parallels:

In the past, there have been similar problems with the preservation of city trees in urban areas. A prominent example is the tree population situation in New York City, which was under pressure, since the city trees often had too little space for their root growth. In contrast to Berlin, trees were often felled in New York City to ensure the safety of the streets instead of taking alternative measures to maintain the trees.

background information:

The problem of the city trees in Berlin is related to the growing urbanization and the increasing demand for traffic areas. Ruhlsdorfer Straße is only an example for many streets in the city that affects similar challenges. The district's decision to take alternative measures to preserve the trees shows an increased awareness of environmental protection and the importance of green spaces in urban areas.

statistics and data:

According to a current study by the Environment Agency Berlin, more than half of the city trees are at risk from lack of space and environmental pollution such as air pollution and drought. The targeted removal of areas and the creation of more space for the root growth of the trees could help improve the health of the city trees and to extend their lifespan.
