Kiebitz population on the green band doubles-BUND success for Vogel of the Year-initiatives to protect the effect
The Kiebitz population on the green band has doubled, and the BUND for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) celebrates an important success in species protection. Thanks to the breeding islands, new fences and re -liters, breed over 60 Kiebitzen this year at the former inner German border in the Altmark, twice as many as in the previous year. Above all, the many weeks with high rainfall contributed to improved breeding and living conditions. The water on the meadows has had a positive effect on the lapwing stock and the breeding success. Through targeted measures and the cooperation with farmers, landscape associations and authorities, the massive dying is successfully counteracted.
The Kiebitz is the bird of 2024 and is on the international red list of endangered bird species. With this success on the green band it becomes clear how important it is to be able to rewind wetlands such as meadows, bogs and the like. In addition to the Kiebitz, other rare species such as the Bekassine, Knäk, Schnatter and spoon duck as well as the moor frog are increasingly returning to the Altmark. This success shows the positive effect of measures to preserve biodiversity.
The green band, along the former inner German border over 1400 kilometers in length, has developed into a unique and cross -country lifeline since 1989. Now a network becomes a network in the form of the "Cross setting" Crosser setting. The federal government places ecological corridors and steps into the surrounding landscape to better network habitats such as wetlands, bogs, dry grass and mountain meadows. In addition to the Kiebitz, other endangered species such as the Kreuzter, the Waldbirkenmaus as well as orchids and wild bees benefit from this.
The success of these measures is promoted and supported by the Federal Program for Biological Diversity. The “Cross setting Green Band” project receives funds from the Federal Office for Nature Conservation and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Security. The Kiebitz protection is also supported by the "meadow bird protection project in the Landgraben dumb" and funded by the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
Further information on the project "Cross -setting Green Band" and the work of the federal government are available on the BUND website. If you have any questions, the BUND press office will be happy to provide you.
