Topping-out ceremony for modern sports hall: Treptow-Köpenick welcomes the new building!
On July 1, 2025, the Treptow-Köpenick district office celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the construction of a new three-field sports hall at Walchenseestrasse 51. This sports hall is a central component of the further development of the school complex of the Grünau School, which is expanded into a daring community school in public all-day operation. The ambitious goal is to increase the school places from currently 810 to up to 1,132 places, which takes into account the demand for school institutions in a growing district. The construction of the sports hall represents the second construction phase that is necessary to meet the increased need for sports areas.
The new sports hall will consist of three indoor parts and include a sports function area for recreational sports. The outdoor sports areas are also modernized. Dr. Torsten Kühne, State Secretary for School construction and culprit, underlined the importance of modern sports halls for contemporary schooling. District Mayor Oliver Igel emphasized the progressive building and the functional, modern planning, while Marco Brauchmann, district councilor, emphasized the use of the hall for physical education and for sports clubs.
Details on the construction project
The sports hall is built on the existing sports field and is designed as a single -storey building in a reinforced concrete construction with a sustainable wooden roof structure. The total costs for the project amount to around 11.44 million euros, which are financed from the state of Berlin's investment funds. The completion of the hall is planned for the first quarter of 2026, the outdoor facilities should be completed by the end of 2026. The project management is located at the SE Facility Management department in the Treptow-Köpenick district office, while the planning and implementation is carried out by the Architecture Bureau Renner Architect GmbH.
As reports by the Berliner Zeitung, the overall project includes three construction phases that are supposed to lead to the emergence of a modern school campus. In addition to the sports hall, the school environment is also renewed or redesigned. These measures are part of a larger initiative of the Berlin Senate, which reacts to the continued population growth and underlines the need for new schools and sports facilities.
