Public guided tours by exhibition 'look back | Looking Back '2024
As part of the exhibition "Reviewed | Looking Back", a number of public tours take place in the Johannisthal town hall in Berlin, which shed light on the dark chapter of the "First German Colonial Exhibition" from 1896. On the occasion of this major event in Treptower Park, 106 people from the German colonies were displayed to serve racist stereotypes and colonial fantasies. Many participants defended themselves against their role and showed resistance how Kwelle Ndumbe from Cameroon, who looked back on the Berlin audience with an opera glass.
The permanent exhibition addresses the biographies and the resistance of the participants of the colonial exhibition from 1896. It also takes a look at the structure of the event and its historical context. The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Treptow-Köpenick museums and the project network decolonial culture of memory in the city. It is the first permanent exhibition on colonialism, racism and black resistance in a public Berlin museum.
The Museum Treptow in the historic town hall of Johannisthal has the following opening times: Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission to the exhibition is free and registration is not necessary.
In a time when postcolonial discourses are becoming increasingly important, the exhibition "Looked back | Looking Back" offers an important platform to deal with the historical and social effects of German colonial history.
