New Community School in Berlin-Treptow: The largest school building project in the city
The new community school in Treptow-Köpenick, Berlin, will open in 2026 and offers space for more than 1,300 children and adolescents as well as 140 educators. The 3.5 hectare property, which is almost as large as five soccer fields, is on the border between Johannisthal and Adlershof and will be the largest school in the Berlin school building offensive.
The school, which is designed according to the pedagogical concept of the Berlin learning and team houses, includes a three-way primary level, a six-tier upper secondary level and a four-day secondary level II. In addition to the classrooms, the school will have two sports halls with a total of six hall parts and outdoor and open spaces.
The architecture of the school building consists of twelve small school houses that extend over three floors and are interrupted by the courtyards and forums. The school open spaces north of the school offer direct access to the adjacent landscape park Johannisthal.
The community school Adlershof will be certified according to the evaluation system sustainable construction with the BNB-silver standard. A photovoltaic system is said to supply school construction with green electricity. The construction work is headed by Zech Hochbau AG and commissioning is planned for school year 2026/27.
An important aspect in the development of the school was the participation process, in which local teachers, representatives: inside the district parent and district student committee and other school bodies were involved. In workshops, recommendations for action on various subject areas were developed that were integrated into the planning of the school.
With the new community school, the Berlin school building offensive sets a strong sign for the future of the educational landscape in Treptow-Köpenick. The school will not only cover the need for school places, but also serve as an open place of learning for the entire community.
