New exhibition: Funds! June 17, 1953 in Treptow and Köpenick from March in the Köpenick Museum

From March 18, 2024, visitors to the Köpenick Museum can experience the exhibition "Fusse! June 17, 1953 in Treptow and Köpenick". The exhibition illuminates the events of the first elementary uprising in a state controlled by the Soviet Union after 1945, which began on June 17, 1953 in Berlin. About a million people took part in the protests against the SED regime, and the exhibition shows the local references and effects in the Berlin districts Treptow and Köpenick, which are often less considered than the center of East Berlin.

Since the 50th anniversary of the uprising in 2003, the importance of the culture of memory has increased in Treptow-Köpenick on June 17, 1953. A memorial stone at the Rübezahl excursion restaurant is reminiscent of the legendary steamer trip on the Müggelsee of June 13, 1953, which served as the starting point for the uprising.

The exhibition is part of the efforts to process the SED dictatorship and was funded by the Federal Foundation for the Refurbishment of the SED dictatorship. Entry to the exhibition in the Köpenick Museum is free and visitors can visit you during the museum opening times. History interested and visitors with a connection to the region have the opportunity to learn more about the local effects and references of June 17, 1953.
