Cool rooms in Treptow-Köpenick: your salvation from the summer heat!

A new concept for cooling down on hot summer days was launched in the Treptow-Köpenick district. From June 1st to August 30th, 2025, a total of ten cool rooms will be available to citizens. These serve as a rest area and a stopover to escape the heat. For users, the cool rooms not only offer a pleasant indoor climate, but also free drinking water and access to toilets. The creation of these rooms is part of the district's measures to increase heat protection services, which are considered necessary in view of climate change. This shows the urgency to protect the health and well-being of residents. According to berlin.de, the rooms are equipped with heat-repellent films to keep the inside temperature comfortable.

In addition to the cool rooms, an educational initiative will be conducted in the district through a heat action day on June 4, 2025. This day aims to raise awareness about heat protection and the necessary adaptation measures. In Treptow-Köpenick, social activities are primarily promoted in order to facilitate exchange between users. The rooms are looked after by trained employees from the KIEZKLUBs who are trained in dealing with people affected by heat. This makes the offers particularly valuable for vulnerable groups, such as older people, children and people with previous illnesses, who, according to t-online.de, are particularly at risk.

Premises and opening times

For the duration of the project, Treptow-Köpenick even offers nine cool rooms on hot days over 30 degrees. The opening hours are until a maximum of 5 p.m. on weekdays; the rooms remain closed on weekends. In Spandau, on the other hand, similar measures were taken, which also include churches as cool retreats, but without drinking water supplies. This illustrates the necessity and diversity of initiatives in Berlin's districts. The heat action plan is viewed as a strategic tool to counteract the actual heat stress and maintain the quality of life of residents.

As nationale-stadtentwicklungspolitik.de emphasizes, heat stress in cities is increasing due to climate change. The negative impact on the health and general well-being of the population requires adaptation of our living spaces. The current measures in Treptow-Köpenick are a first step in this direction to create tolerable living conditions for all people and to better cope with future heat waves.
