In 2010 it was identified as a special monument because a renovation was urgently needed. The Berlin bathing companies had already planned to close the bath in 2006; The district then took over the outdoor pool. This initiative was supported by the association Bürger for Rahnsdorf e.V.

The renovation costs were originally estimated at 8 million euros, but rose to 14 million euros by 2020. A renovation and usage concept that was approved by the population in 2010 included the return of the components to the listed substance and the use of alternative energies. In a significant step, Minister of State Monika Grütters announced on July 21, 2021 that the lido will be renovated with 12.6 million euros in federal funding, whereby the renovation of wood structures and the restoration of the original staircase.

future steps and planning

A central goal of ongoing work is to complete the roof seal, the facade, the sanitary areas and the installation of an elevator until the end of the year. The repair of the bank edge, which is estimated at 45 meters, is also planned for this year. This measure is carried out with stone mattresses, geotextil and tube planting in order to counteract the challenges of flow behavior and waves. The implementation of these measures is scheduled for September or October, outside the main bathroom season.

As early as the third quarter of 2025, preparations for the expression procedure for operator search should begin, with the aim of determining the future operator of the lido by the second quarter of 2026 at the latest. District Mayor Oliver Igel emphasizes the commitment of facility management in this process, while the renovation of the listed ensemble will continue to be advanced with the support of the federal government and the country.

The mugbelsee lido is therefore on the way to becoming a modern bathing area that can be retained the historical face of the building and can be used all year round for events.
