Memory plaque for Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Köpenick is moved
Marco Brauchmann, district councilor for further training, school, culture and sport, announced that the plaque for the former Jewish cemetery of Köpenick on the courtyard of the Gehsener Straße 78 in 12555 Berlin-Köpenick will be removed in the next few days. The reason for this is that the table at the current location is not accessible to the public. In November, the memory sign near the previous location is to be re -established, for which a separate announcement will be made.
The former Jewish cemetery of Köpenick was between Gehsener Straße and Hoernlestraße and was acquired in 1894 by the "Synagogue Community Cöpenick". The cemetery was desecrated during the National Socialist dictatorship and destroyed by the war. He was restored in 1948 by decision of the BVV and the Council of the Köpenick district before being neglected in the following years and finally converted into a green area. The remaining tombstones were put together into a pyramid -shaped memorial, which was removed in 1968. The tombstones were then brought to the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee and set up there.
The plaque, which is reminiscent of this historic place, was inaugurated on January 27, 2004. Due to the lack of accessibility of the inner courtyard of the residential building in Gehsener Straße, the table is now being moved to ensure that it is open to the public and that the memory of the former Jewish cemetery of Köpenick is adequately preserved.
Overall, the history of the former Jewish cemetery of Köpenick illustrates the importance of memory and memory of past events and the need to preserve historical places and its stories for the future.
