Flowers that sing: an acoustic experience on Oberschöneweider cemeteries
Flowers that sing: an acoustic experience on Oberschöneweider cemeteries
In an innovative project, the fascinating question is raised: Can plants create musical sounds? From October 2024, the people in Berlin have the opportunity to explore this together with the film music composer Cassis B Staudt in the cemeteries in Oberschöneweide and Baumschulenweg. A special technology is used to bring the acoustic signals from plants to life.
The idea behind the so-called "sustainability walks" is based on the so-called biodato sonification. For this purpose, clamps and sensor pads are attached to different plants, including leaves, moss and mushrooms. These devices measure the electrical resistance that arises due to biochemical processes such as photosynthesis. These measurement data are converted into tones, which are then made audible via a synthesizer. In this way, the participants can hear the “voices” of the plants and experience a completely new connection to nature.

dr. Claudia Leistner, the district councilor and head of the urban development department, streets, green spaces and the environment, explains: "Nature is dependent on we humans speak for them. With this special sound experience, we give a voice for a change." These tours are an extraordinary opportunity to strengthen the environmental awareness of the participants and to emphasize the importance of nature and environmental protection. They should not only promote the nature experience of the participants, but also emphasize the cemeteries as valuable, natural spaces.
Participation in the tours is free, but the number of places per group is limited to 20 people. A prior registration is necessary and can be made at the Greensoundsworld@gmail.com email address.
