On April 8th, the international Roma Day is celebrated worldwide, which is reminiscent of the first World Roma Congress in 1971. This day serves to draw attention to the situation of the Roma, in particular on their discrimination and persecution, while at the same time the culture of this ethnic minority is celebrated. In Treptow-Köpenick, the Roma flag is being hoisted on this occasion to set an example against anti-Ziganism.

The Roma, also known as Sinti and Roma, are an ethnic minority in Europe, which is often faced with prejudices and discrimination. The International Roma Day is intended to help raise awareness of the situation of this community and to show solidarity.
