memorial event on the 63rd anniversary of the Berlin Wall building

on August 13, 2024 marks the day the day on which the Berlin Wall was built. A symbolic day that reminds not only of the division of the city, but also of the victims who have lost their lives.

under the direction of district mayor Oliver Igel and the head of the district assembly, Peter Groos, a commemorative event will take place on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. The meeting point is the cemetery Baumschulenweg in the new part, Kiefholzstraße 222-236, 12437 Berlin.

The event begins with an honor on the memorial plaque for the wall deaths without a grave site. A moment to commemorate the innocent victim who had to leave their lives on the Berlin wall.

Furthermore, the event leads to Kiefholzstraße, near the Dammweg, behind the Kuckucksheim allotment garden. Here a memorial is reminiscent of the tragic story of Jörg Hartmann and Lothar Schleusener, two children aged 10 and 13 who were shot by border guard many years ago

The conclusion of the memorial event takes place at the memorial stele for Chris Guefroy in the Chris-Guefroy-Allee. Chris Guefroy was the last fatalities on the Berlin Wall when he was killed by the border guard in 1989 at the age of 20.

The wall, which once shared Berlin, extended over 17 km in length and left deep traces in city history. Treptow was one of the areas with the longest section of the wall and the death strip, which cut the city and tore families apart.

The entire population is cordially invited to take part in this memorial event and to commemorate the victims of the Berlin Wall together. Because even years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it is important to remember this dark time in German history and never forget
