Tempelhofer Feld: Protests against Scholz 'blueprints for Berlin's green lungs

In the middle of intensive debates about housing in Berlin, Chancellor Olaf Scholz raised a controversial demand on December 4, 2024: he pleads for the development of Tempelhofer Feld, a popular open space and former airport area. Scholz argues that living space is urgently needed in Germany and described the Tempelhofer Feld as "unused", which encounters a strong echo of citizens and politicians in the capital. Many Berliners find this statement disturbing because they have been fighting for the preservation of this green space for years, which is a retreat for tens of thousands. This reported, among other things, Berlin Live .

Gabi Jung, the managing director of the Federal Environmental and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND), countered the calls of Scholz Scharf and emphasized that the Tempelhofer Feld was an irreplaceable space for the city nature and a leisure area for hundreds of thousands. Her criticism goes so far that she abits the chancellor's claim as a "show number", which could further deepen the division in the city. She also argues that the actual implementation of a development, i.e. the conversion of a green area into a residential area, can take up to two decades. The vehicles vote against this proposal the great importance of the Tempelhofer Feld for the Berliner, as well as Tagesspiegel noted.
