Order of Merit for outstanding commitment and interreligious dialogue
In a solemn act, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany was awarded to Amill Gorgis in the Golden Hall of the Schöneberg town hall. The ecumenical representative of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch in Berlin was awarded for his extraordinary commitment to the recording and integration of refugees from Syria in the north of Schöneberg.
District Mayor Jörn Oltmann praised Gorgis for his great strength to help people and catch them. When his community became the central point of contact for many refugees from Syria in 2015, Gorgis tirelessly campaigned for the refugees with the support of volunteer and cooperating partners. He provided great commitment to accommodation, supply, registration, support, merging and training of people seeking help.
The Order of Merit, awarded by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, was personally presented by district mayor Jörn Oltmann. In his acceptance speech, he emphasized Gorgi's outstanding merits in the interreligious dialogue and recalled joint events such as the ecumenical Pentecost service in front of the Schöneberg town hall.
