Tragic accident on Breslauer Platz: Tree crash violates several people

On January 2, 2024, in Berlin Friedenau, a tragic incident occurred on the Breslauer Platz, in which a tree was overturned and several people were injured. The district office of Tempelhof-Schöneberg wants to express its deep regret about this tragic accident and wish everyone involved a quick recovery. The exact course of the accident is currently being examined, for which an external assessment is also obtained.

According to the available information, the green spaces of the street and green space department received a call from the police at around 2:30 p.m., which informed about the incident. The responsible employees of the green spaces department immediately went to the scene of the accident to support the cleanup and ensure the tree trunk for further examinations.

The affected tree, a red oak (Quercus rubra) at the age of around 42 with a trunk circumference of about 146 centimeters, was in a raised bed on the Breslauer. Like all city trees in the district, this tree was also examined for malicious symptoms during the annual visual inspection. The last tree control took place in June 2023, in which no security concerns were found. In the first examinations on the day of the accident by the district tree column, a fungal attack was found. It is not yet possible to determine whether this is related to the overthrow. As a precautionary measure and to prevent further damage, the felling of two other trees in the raised beds on Breslauer Platz was arranged.

The district office Tempelhof-Schöneberg will continue to inform the public about the progress of the investigations and is available for questions and concerns.

This incident may have an impact on the public perception of tree security and urban green planning. Citizens could be concerned about the safety of city trees in their neighborhood and make increased demands for regular reviews and care measures. The district could also take measures to improve the safety and health of urban green spaces, such as increased controls and the inclusion of tree nursing specialists.

In the table below, some data on the trees concerned and their condition are listed:

| Tree species | Age | Tribal circumference | Last control | Mushroom infestation determined |
| ————— | ————————- | ————————————- |
| Red oak | approx. 42 years | 146 cm | June 2023 | Yes |

It remains to be seen how the authorities react to this incident and what measures are taken to ensure the safety and health of the city trees in Berlin.
