The “Sustainable Renewal” program in Berlin has established itself as a crucial part of the urban development funding program that emerged from the Urban Redevelopment West program. How reported is a joint initiative by the federal government, the state of Berlin and the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district. The aim is to adapt urban districts to the challenges of climate change and demographic changes. In addition, public space is to be upgraded and the social infrastructure expanded.
The Schöneberg-Südkreuz funding area covers an area of 183 hectares and is one of the larger funding areas in Berlin in terms of both size and funding volume. Since 2005, around 32.5 million euros in funding have been invested here, which have been used to implement 46 projects. These projects have permanently changed the face of the district and significantly improved the quality of life of the residents.
Future measures and projects
Although the funding is gradually phasing out, various measures are still to be implemented and completed by 2030. There are currently several planned projects on the agenda. This includes the construction of a sports function building on the Schöneberger Linse educational campus as well as the renovation of the sports field on Vorarlberger Damm and the new construction of the Youth House on Werner-Voß-Damm.
Another important project is the redesign of Hildegard-Knef-Platz, for which a concept is being drawn up. This is done in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn, which is intended to improve the connection and functionality of the square. Citizens are invited to actively participate and to contribute their ideas and suggestions on January 21, 2025 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Schöneberg town hall. This offers the opportunity to get an overview of successfully completed projects and an outlook on new projects. Access to the venue is barrier-free via the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße entrance.
