Redesign of the John-F.-Kennedy-Platz: Ideas for Weimar's future!

On December 4, 2024, an exciting cooperation project was launched between the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district office and the Bauhaus University Weimar. The initiative aims to develop innovative ideas for John-F.-Kennedy-Platz and significantly increase its quality of stay. Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Garkisch heads the project together with Monique Van Miert from the neighborhood bread e.V. Berlin and other interested parties to redesign the square and thus also strengthen the local market. District City Councilor Dr. Saskia Ellenbeck enthusiastically announced: "The John-F.-Kennedy-Platz in its current form no longer meets the requirements of our time."

cultural heritage with historical value

The Bauhaus University Weimar, which plays a central role in the history of modern architecture, also combines this project with its own inheritance. The main building of the university, built between 1904 and 1911, is considered one of the most important art school buildings in Art Nouveau and was the birthplace of the Bauhaus, which was founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius. This institution set standards for a new future in art and design training, which can still be felt today. As uni-weimar.de , the impressive entrance area of the main building in Art Nouveau and significant works of art such as Rodins "Eva" enchanted which embodies the creative atmosphere of that time.

Inspiration from Bauhaus history will play an important role in redesigning the John-F.-Kennedy-Platz. "I'm looking forward to the creative ideas of the students," said Ellenbeck, while recognizing the initiative that the place for the future should be redesigned. By linking the history and contemporary approaches by the students of the Weimar University, the development will not only strengthen the aesthetic attraction of the square, but also beat a bridge to the rich cultural past.
