New face for Ella-Barowsky-Straße: construction work started

Here the excavator rolls and it starts! On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the starting shot for the great redesign of Ella-Barowsky-Straße! At 8:30 a.m. there was a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony , with district councilor Dr. Saskia Ellenbeck and the construction company M. Hajek Straßen- und Tiefbau GmbH together took the first step into a new era. Interested citizens and journalists could be there up close, ask questions and explore the first construction phase. A truly historical moment for the Schöneberg lens!

"The Ella-Barowsky-Straße is an important neighborhood axis that is to be made more secure and more environmentally friendly with an all-round upgrade. This is how we increase the quality of life and create a tempting connection for pedestrians and cyclists between the Südkreuz and Schöneberg stations!" Saskia Ellenbeck with visible enthusiasm.

Vision of a foot and bike-friendly oasis

Here the Ella-Barowsky-Straße is transformed into a traffic-friendly city road that also invites you to linger! The first construction phase, between Hedwig-Dohm-Straße and Gotenstraße, is all about pedestrians and cyclists. Shadow -giving trees are to be planted and the street space is reorganized. Barrier -free sidewalks and nodes are converted according to the latest standards - nobody is falling by the wayside!

In addition, a separate cycling system is launched for cyclists at the sidewalk level, which is securely separated from the road by a combined park and plant strip! A paradise for all road users!

The construction work is carried out on each side, which means that traffic is diverted with a one -way regulation. Access to the houses is of course guaranteed. Experts estimate that the redesign will take at least two years. A long, but worthwhile way!

A look into the future: city places and green oases

The planning stipulates that there will be a total of three construction phases! After the first consequence of exciting changes at the Gotenstraße intersection in the second construction phase . Here, the “Charlotte-Wolff-Platz” is a living town square that is designed according to the innovative sponge city principle with new trees and seepage-capable areas for rainwater-a sustainable solution for everyone!

The third construction phase is planned west of Gotenstraße, here there are still fundamental decisions, but the anticipation for the overall concept of Schöneberg lens is already noticeable!

This ambitious project is financed by the urban development program "Sustainable Renewal" of the federal and state governments as well as by means of the district! It is time that Schöneberg blossomed!
