New shine for the Airlift Square: redesign will start soon!

Grün Berlin has announced that it has taken over the redesign of the Airlift Square in Berlin. This redesign is particularly relevant because the square represents a busy traffic junction between the districts of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Tempelhof-Schöneberg. Construction is scheduled to start at the end of 2025. In the coming years, the square will be redesigned to meet the challenges of a growing city. The aim of the redesign is to create a sustainable open space that serves as a role model for residents and Berliners.

The first structural measures focus on the future piazza, the neighborhood square, Manfred-von-Richthofen-Straße and the Kaiserkorso. Jörn Oltmann, the district mayor, emphasizes the importance of creating an attractive and sustainable environment. This will be approached with sustainability and climate resilience in mind. In recent years, citizens have had the opportunity to participate intensively in the planning and to contribute their ideas.

Participation of citizens

Residents and businesses will also be closely involved in the next phases of the redevelopment. An event organized specifically for these groups provides space for questions about the process, implementation and the different construction phases. Traders also receive information about funding opportunities that are intended to help cushion possible loss of income during the construction period.

The Airlift Square not only has historical significance, but also functions as a garden monument. It should also meet people's needs for livable neighborhoods while providing sustainable, climate-adaptable solutions. This project is one of the first major reference projects of the Charter for Berlin Urban Green, which promotes innovative and sustainable developments in the areas of transport and open spaces in the capital.

Sustainable urban development in focus

The creation of lively and livable settlements plays a central role in urban development. The tasks of urban development include, among other things, land-use planning for residential, commercial and infrastructure as well as the promotion of urban renovations. In the context of the redesign of the Airlift Square, reference is also made to the sustainability requirement in the building code, which calls for harmony between social, economic and environmental requirements.

In order to meet the challenges of high building density, environmental protection and quality of life must be reconciled. Research projects and initiatives for a compact and mixed urban structure support these goals and offer versatile solutions to strengthen urban greenery and public open spaces in urban development. These approaches should not only affect the airlift site, but also improve the entire urban area and shape it for future generations.

Overall, the redesign of the Luftbrücke Square shows Berlin's desire to meet the challenges of urban life with innovative, sustainable solutions that are designed by its citizens. The measures aim to promote a higher quality of life in the city while integrating environmentally friendly mobility and climate resilience.
