Memory of trans victims: Tempelhof-Schöneberg sets a sign

On November 20, an important sign will be set worldwide - the transgender day of Remembrance. On this day we not only commemorate the many victims of trans -hostile violence, but also raise our voice against discrimination that people have to experience based on their gender identity. In Berlin, too, reality for trans people is terrifying: hate and violence are sad companions of everyday life.

Why is this day so important? The origin lies in the tragic murder of Rita Hester, an African -American trans woman who was brutally killed in the United States in 1998. It is shocking that the murder has not yet been cleared up and has hardly been discussed in the media. This shocking ignorance led the activist Gwendolyn Anne Smith launched the commemoration day in order to draw attention to violence against trans people.

a symbol of solidarity

An urgent sign was set in Berlin: District Mayor Jörn Oltmann had the trans-flag at the Schöneberg town hall. A visible sign against discrimination and for respect:

District Mayor Jörn Oltmann:
"Today we commemorate all people who have experienced violence because of their transformation.

a global commemoration day

The commemoration day is not only celebrated in Berlin; It extends across the globe. All over the world, people stand together to stand up for the rights of trans people and make their stories visible. Despite the continuing violence, it is crucial to use this day to raise awareness and give the victims a voice.

If you want to learn more about the transgender day of Remembrance, you can find out more on the district office's website. Together we fight against prejudices and for a world in which everyone is recognized in their identity.
