Pleasing balance sheet: more trees planted than felled - Tempelhof -Schöneberg 2023

The road tree balance of the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district for 2023 shows a positive development, since more trees were planted for the second time in a row. A total of 547 new trees were planted, while 409 trees had to be felled. As a result, the tree population in the district has grown by 138 street trees within one year, and a total of 35,610 street trees. On average every 11 meters (one-sided) there is a street tree in the streets of Tempelhof-Schöneberg.

The district councilor Dr. Saskia Ellenbeck was positive about this development and emphasized the importance of tree plantings as a sustainable and effective means of climate adaptation in an increasingly hot city. Road trees are an important heat protection, especially for older and weakened people, since streets with trees are proven to be significantly cooler during hot periods. Dr. Ellenbeck thanked the employees in the responsible departments as well as the citizens who contribute to the preservation of the trees through targeted watering and maintaining tree slices.

The positive development of the road tree balance of Tempelhof-Schöneberg could have local effects on the city climate by serving more trees as natural climate systems against the heat in the city. Historically, street trees have been playing an important role in urban environmental design for a long time, both for the cityscape and the quality of life of the residents.
