Energy efficiency in Tempelhof-Schöneberg: new refrigerators save electricity
The district of Tempelhof-Schöneberg replaced a total of 183 outdated refrigerators with modern, energy-efficient devices in 2022 and 2023. This measure has led the district to save around 122,800 kilowatt hours annually, which corresponds to approximately 86 % of the previously used electrical energy. This saving corresponds to the average electricity consumption of around 40 four-person households and at the same time means that approx. 52 tons of CO2 equivalents are avoided a year.
The purchase of the new devices will be reindeer within a few than 1.5 years due to the lower energy costs. This measure was carried out by the Environment and Nature Conservation Office in cooperation with the district climate protection officer and the Facility Management department.
It is particularly noteworthy that this project is the first to be implemented in the district's climate protection and sustainability management system. Tempelhof-Schöneberg was the first Berlin district to implement a continuous system to increase climate protection and to promote sustainability. This includes the introduction of a control body, the determination of key figures and regular reporting.
A focus topic within the system is the identification and optimization of inefficient "permanent consumers", i.e. electrical devices that are permanently switched on and therefore continuously consume electricity.
To clarify the savings and effects, a table with comparative values before and after exchanging the refrigerators could be helpful in order to make the positive effect of the measure on energy consumption and CO2 emissions clear.
