District Tempelhof -Schöneberg commemorates victims of trans*hostile violence - statement of the district mayor
On November 20th, the victims of enemy violence will be commemorated worldwide. This year, too, people have become victims of hatred, violence and even murder due to their trans*sexuality. In the past few months alone there have been a large number of trans*enemy attacks in Berlin. Violence and discrimination against trans*people are present worldwide and are often bitter reality. The commemoration day goes back to the murder of African -American trans sex Rita Hester in the United States in November 1998. There was no reimbursement of reports about this murder and it has not yet been clarified. The trans*activists Gwendolyn Anne Smith subsequently founded the "Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR)". In quiet memory of all victims trans*enemy violence, district mayor Jörn Oltmann has raised the trans*flag in front of the Schöneberg town hall for the district office Tempelhof-Schöneberg. District Mayor Jörn Oltmann sets a strong sign against trans*enemy violence and emphasizes the importance of jointly fighting prejudices and hatred of trans*people. In Berlin, the LGBTQ+community has a strong presence and is actively committed to the rights and security of trans*people. Nevertheless, trans*enemy attacks and discrimination are still a problem against which it must continue to be acted actively. Further information on the topic of transgender Day of Remembrance can be found on the district office website.
