Start construction work: New bicycle traffic facility in Berlin-Schöneberg

At the beginning of March, the construction work for a new bicycle traffic facility on the main street in Berlin-Schöneberg was started. With the start of the marking work, the first visible changes can now be seen on the street. An information event was held on the occasion of this milestone, with the district councilor Dr. Saskia Ellenbeck explained the background of the project.

The main street in Berlin-Schöneberg is heavily frequented and in the past there have often been dangerous situations because there was no separate bicycle traffic facility on a distance of 1,250 meters. Cyclists had to move in mixed traffic with cars, vans and buses, which led to uncertainties and conflicts.

The establishment of a protected bicycle traffic strip was therefore urgently necessary, especially since this section is part of the Berlin wheel network and thus has a high priority for bicycle traffic. The measure should benefit all road users because it offers everyone their own safe space on the street.

It is important that cities and districts invest in their infrastructure and take measures to improve safety and comfort for cyclists. This not only promotes environmentally friendly mobility, but also contributes to reducing accidents and conflicts in road traffic.

The following table lists some relevant information on cycling systems in German cities:

| City | Length of the bicycle traffic facilities (in km) | Number of cyclists per day |
| —————- | ——————————— | --——————— | Berlin | 1,250 | 50,000 |
| Hamburg | 900 | 40,000 |
| Munich | 800 | 35,000 |
| Cologne | 700 | 30,000 |
| Frankfurt | 600 | 25,000 |
