Tempelhof-Schöneberg: Lowest car content since 2015-a rethink?
A remarkable trend is emerging in Tempelhof-Schöneberg: While in many parts of Germany the number of registered private cars continues to increase, the district has a decline. This was especially the case between 2019 and 2021 when the motorization rate in the region experienced a strong increase. The value is currently only about 338 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, which has been the lowest level since 2015.
At the same time, there is a positive trend in terms of the use of electric vehicles. In 2023, the proportion of private electric cars in the entire district was around 1.6 percent, a significant increase compared to the 0.77 percent in 2021. This development could be considered an indicator of growing awareness of the population for environmentally friendly mobility.
important votes from the district administration
District City Councilor Dr. Ellenbeck commented on the situation and emphasized the positive changes: “Contrary to the nationwide trend towards increasing and larger private cars, we have actually done the U-Talent in Tempelhof-Schöneberg. After decades of increase, the number of registered private cars has been falling for 2 years. This creates space on the streets- for more green, more foot and bicycle traffic and less traffic jam.”
This development is not only important for the environment, but also contributes to improving the quality of life in the district. Dr. Ellenbeck emphasizes the importance of a modern mobility mix and the promotion of environmentally friendly means of transport: “With a modern mix of mobility and a promotion of the environmental association, we want all people in the district to be able to achieve their goals. We invest a lot in the infrastructure and work every year - for example with jelbi - attractive alternatives to your own car."
Through these investments and initiatives, attempts are made to change the mobility behavior of citizens in the long term. The decline in the motorization rate could serve as a model for other districts and cities that also strive for a reduction in private transport. The focus on the environmental association shows that the district is willing to become more environmentally friendly and more sustainable in the transition.
Overall, it can be said that the district of Tempelhof-Schöneberg, with its sunken degree of motorization and the increase in electric vehicles, takes an important step towards better and sustainable urban mobility. The measures to promote environmentally friendly transport are a central element to counter the challenges of climate change and to improve living conditions for all residents.
