Study to record racism in health care - participation for those affected

can participate in the inpatient acute care and rehabilitation itself or with relatives racism. Racism states: People are disadvantaged or treated worse than others due to their skin color, origin or culture. In health care, racisms can lead to people not only receive less information, but also poorer medical care. If disease symptoms are interpreted incorrectly due to stereotypes and prejudices, this can lead to incorrect diagnosis or treatment. Using the example of inpatient acute care and rehabilitation, a research team from the Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin, the University of Witten/Herdecke and the Fulda University of Fulda are examining racism from the perspective of those affected and institutions. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. "We would like to learn more about how patients and their relatives experience discrimination in hospitals or rehabilitation facilities how they deal with unequal treatment and what effects these experiences have on their lives, health and well-being," explain the researchers at the Fulda University of Applied Sciences, Professor Dr. Regina Brunnett and Ksenia Meshkova. The scientists want to use their findings to develop recommendations on how hospitals and rehabilitation facilities react better to racism and can reduce them.

Online questionnaire or in-depth interview in five languages
The sub -project in Witten/Herdecke is looking for patients who are willing to share their experiences. An online questionnaire is available in German, Turkish, Russian and Arabic. The preferred language can be selected at the beginning of the questionnaire. Filling out the questionnaire takes 10 to 15 minutes. The project ensures that answers are anonymized and only used for this study.

On the other hand, patients and their relatives can lead an in -depth interview with the researchers in Fulda - personally, by phone or online. A group of researchers from the Alice Salomon University of Berlin, the University of Witten/Herdecke and the Fulda University of Applied Sciences start a project to investigate racism and discrimination in inpatient acute care and rehabilitation. The project is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The researchers want to learn more about the experiences of patients and their relatives in the context of racism and unequal treatment in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. In particular, people with escape history, chronic diseases or impairments as well as older people should be involved, since they are particularly dependent on support in health care.

In order to gain the experiences of those affected, the researchers offer two opportunities to participate in the study. On the one hand, an online questionnaire is available in German, Turkish, Russian and Arabic. The questionnaire takes about 10 to 15 minutes and the answers are anonymized and only used for this study. If you prefer to have an in -depth interview, you can do so personally, by phone or online with the researchers in Fulda. The interviews can be managed in German, English, Russian, Arabic or Turkish and is expected to last 30 to 120 minutes.

The contact details for the online questionnaire are Tuğba Aksakal from the University of Witten/Herdecke (Tel.: 01511/753 4060, email: tugba.aksakal@uni-wh.de) and for the in-depth interviews Ksenia Meshkova from the Fulda University (email: ksenia.meshkova@hs-fulda.de).

The research project aims to develop recommendations on how hospitals and rehabilitation facilities can react better to racism and can reduce them. By making racism and discrimination known and combating in health care, medical care for all people can be improved, regardless of their skin color, origin or culture.
