Rising deportations in Germany: A look at the new balance sheet

A small increase in the deportations mixed up the political landscape! In the first part of 2024, a total of 12,589 people were pushed back and forth, 747 more than in the comparison period of the previous year. A brave step? Or just a weak attempt that does not do justice to the facts?

However, the numbers are more sobering. While the deportations are increasing in comparison, the number of volunteers drops. With 6,499 returnees, that is 205 less than a year ago. Christoph de Vries, CDU member of the Bundestag, is anything but enthusiastic and describes the deportation offensive of the traffic light coalition as a total flop, a so-called "pipe crepe". Where is the promised consequence of Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz when it comes to tracing foreigners who are obliged to leave?

a conflict in the coalition

The dispute between the Union and the traffic light coalition has now reached a new chapter. In a passionate exchange in the Bundestag, Scholz represents the Union Federal Ministers that they had taken no measures. On the other hand, de Vries reminds that 22,097 people were deported under Horst Seehofer in 2019-a record that was reduced by 25 percent in 2023 under the current SPD Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.

In the middle of all of these discussions, the sober facts are. The number of deportations experienced a gradual increase after a dramatic decline due to the corona pandemic. In 2021 there were around 12,000 deportations and almost 13,000 in 2022. However, compared to 2019, the current value is still 17 percent below the number of 15,219 deportations in the first seven months.

The pressure on the coalition is growing

The federal government is now facing enormous pressure. What happened to the great announcements about the return offensive? De Vries sums up the union's clear message: The goals of the coalition appear unrealistic and unbelievable. So the question arises: How will Angela Merkel's successor master the situation while reality is sitting on the neck?
