Future of the Breitenbachplatz: tunnel and traffic in the focus of the residents
As part of the 25th regiotal of the Southwest Regional Link Tubator, the redesign of Breitenbachplatz was discussed intensively. A central topic was the closed car tunnel under the residential complex on Schlangenbader Strasse. Urban Aykal, an outstanding participant of the discussion, clearly expressed the need for a clear decision regarding the tunnel: "We need a binding answer to what happens to the tunnel. This question is decisive for how the Breitenbachplatz can look in the future. In my opinion, renovation and reopening of the tunnel and in my opinion would be catastrophic." Aykal advocated a redesign of the square, in which traffic calming and better quality of stay should be in the foreground.
Another important aspect of the talks was the future of Schildhornstrasse, as Patrick Steinhoff explained. The dismantling of the motorway bridge will lead to around 8,500 square meters of open space. Steinhoff reported on the efforts of the Senate Department for Urban Development to use this area for living space. At the same time, however, he emphasized the crucial framework: "However, living is only possible where the corresponding circumstances are available. If the traffic flows through Schildhornstrasse again as and a half ago, due to the high emission values, no living is possible for legal reasons."
The role of the residents and the change in the city
Prof. Dr. Andreas Knie turned directly to the audience and tried to encourage the residents. "The city has changed, almost 40 percent of people no longer go to the office from Monday to Friday- rather they have become local and time flexible," he said. This development has a significant impact on the urban infrastructure. "The city of the future will no longer have a place for privately parked vehicles in public space," added Dr. Knee. He sees this change as an opportunity that the development around Breitenbachplatz could become a symbol of the transformation of today's society.
The discussion at Regiotalk has shown that planning for Breitenbachplatz must be viewed in a larger context. The expressions of experts and residents illustrate the need for a responsible urban development and coordinated with the needs of citizens. The upcoming changes offer the opportunity to significantly improve the quality of life in the city and to promote future -oriented development.
