Wild animals in Berlin: Why feeding wild boar and the like should be avoided

As a Berlin citizen, we have to deal with the problem of the growing wild boar population in our districts. Wild animals such as wild boars, raccoons and foxes have adapted to the urban environment, especially in districts such as Steglitz-Zehlendorf. The rich food offer in the city makes it particularly attractive for these animals to live and survive here. But the increasing presence of wild boar in urban areas leads to conflicts between humans and animals.

The unauthorized feeding of wild animals, especially wild boars, is a common problem and often results from misunderstood love for animals. Many people wrongly believe that the animals cannot find enough food and try to help them. However, this is not the case because wild animals have sophisticated skills to deal with food shortages. Feeding the wild boars loses their natural shyness to people, penetrate residential areas and cause damage to public places and in gardens.

In addition, unnatural feeding behavior can lead to aggressive behavior of the animals, as they get used to the grant and press people to maintain further food. For these reasons, feeding wild animals is prohibited in accordance with the State Hunting Act (§§34/50 l JagdG BLN) and is punished with a fine of up to € 5000. In order to ensure a harmonious living together between humans and animals, it is therefore of crucial importance not to feed the wild animals and ensure that edible waste is properly disposed of.

As a citizen of Berlin, it is our responsibility to be aware of how our behavior influences the wildlife in our area. We should therefore do everything we can to maintain the healthy distance between wild animals and people in order to avoid conflicts. In the event of questions about dealing with wild animals, citizens can contact the wildlife phone of the NABU (030 - 54 71 28 91) or find out more about the website. Together we can contribute to the fact that a respectful coexistence of humans and animals in our city is guaranteed.
