The judgment of the Federal Constitutional Court of December 19, 2023 has extensive effects on the election to the German Bundestag, which took place on September 26, 2021 in Berlin. As a result of this judgment, the election must be repeated. The choice of repetition must take place within 60 days of the verdict, and February 11, 2024, was determined as a new election day. This means that the citizens will meet again at the ballot boxes to give their vote.

For the citizens of Steglitz-Zehlendorf, there is specific information on the effects of the repetition choice. A total of 16 votes are affected by the repetition, and the division of the electoral area corresponds to the original division of 2021. This process in particular influences the postal voting, which is possible from January 8, 2024. Citizens can apply for postal voting documents online, by post or personally in the postal voting office in the Zehlendorf town hall. In addition, people entitled to vote must present an official photo ID in order to be able to participate in the election.

Important information also affects the postal preservation of election advertising on the part of the various candidates. In accordance with Section 50 (1) Federal Registration Act, the registration authorities are entitled to provide parties and groups of voters in the six of the months preceding the election from the registration register.

For those who have been moved from Steglitz-Zehlendorf in the meantime, but have lived in one of the voting districts affected by the repeat, it is important to know that they cannot take part in the choice of repetition. Conversely, people who now live in a voice district affected by the repetition, but were properly registered by December 31, 2023, can take part in the election.
