Steglitz-Zehlendorf: E-mobility as a key to climate neutrality!

Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Deutschland - In Berlin, the conversion of the traffic sector to climate -neutral drive forms is recognized as a decisive step for climate protection. This is emphasized by Patrick Steinhoff, district councilor for urban development, which emphasizes the role model function of the federal government, the states and municipalities in terms of e-mobility. Via urban areas in which paths are usually shorter, there is a special opportunity to promote sustainable means of transport, especially through the use of e-utility vehicles.

The Steglitz-Zehlendorf district is currently actively testing the conversion from combustion engines to electric vehicles in the urban development office. The “E-Vehicle for the Survey Service” project is used to gain experience that should contribute to the importance of alternative drives and the entire goal of climate neutrality. This model project runs from June 2024 to September 2025 and is funded as part of the Berlin program for sustainable development 2 (Bene 2), financed by the European Fund for Regional Development and the State of Berlin.

The challenges in the traffic sector

The transport sector in Germany is an essential cause of greenhouse gas emissions. In 2019, 165 million tons of CO2 were emitted, a value almost at the level of 1990. These emissions make up about 20 percent of the energy -related greenhouse gases in Germany. Like the Federal Center for Political Education reported, 96 percent of these emissions come from road traffic, mainly through cars (61 percent) and trucks (36 percent).

The need for a traffic turnover becomes increasingly clear, since by 2030 a reduction in emissions to 85 million tons of CO2 must be achieved, which corresponds to an almost 50 percent reduction within a decade. This transformation requires a fundamental change in the direction of sustainable mobility, in particular through increased electrified modes of transport and public transport systems.

political and social measures for climate neutrality

In order to achieve the climate goals, the traffic sector must be switched to electrical drives, which also means a strong promotion of e-mobility. The federal government plans to double the passenger numbers in rail traffic by 2030 and has introduced strict CO2 emission standards for new vehicles. Furthermore, the expansion of the cycling infrastructure and the promotion of local transport is of central importance to relieve motorized private transport.

The proportion of electrical vehicles is currently still low: electric vehicles make up almost 30 percent of new registrations, but only 1.3 percent of the total stock of cars. Plug-in hybrids are often used like burners, which in practice does not lead to any significant savings in emissions.

Additional challenges and proposals for solutions for a successful traffic transition include the improvement of the infrastructure, the increase in usage efficiency in private transport and the increased use of renewable energies in the fleet. Only through well -founded measures and growing awareness of the urgency of climate protection can a sustainable improvement in mobility in Germany be achieved. The reference to low-emissions, such as XING will be decisive in doing so, a positive turn achieve.
