Safer cycling on the Königsweg: conversion to a cycle route starts today!

Today, September 17, 2025, construction work begins on the Königsweg in Berlin, which is expected to bring about a significant improvement for cyclists. According to the Press release from the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district office A total of 1,300 meters of the road will be converted into a bicycle route in two sections. The measures aim to make cycling safer and more comfortable.

The rehabilitation of the road surface will be carried out from September 17th to 26th, 2025. One focus is on the marking and signage of the new cycle paths by infraVelo. The conversion affects the section between the turning hammers on Katteweg and Am Waldhaus street as well as the area between Clauertstrasse and Idsteiner Strasse. These changes are intended to make the Königsweg, which is an important connection between Potsdam-Babelsberg and Zehlendorf, more attractive for cyclists.

Improvements for traffic safety

The renovation work brings with it numerous advantages. Reducing vehicle traffic creates increased safety for cyclists and pedestrians. This includes the establishment of bicycle road safety lanes as well as large-scale red markings at intersections and junctions, which will improve the visibility of bicycle traffic. The project participants are the district office, the Senate Administration for Mobility and infraVelo, with financing being ensured by the Senate Administration.

Another project, the reconstruction of the northern Tietzenweg between Gardeschützenweg and Unter den Eichen, is planned for October. As part of these renovations, Tietzenweg will also be redesigned as a bicycle street, which will further strengthen the infrastructure for bicycle traffic.

Growing interest in cycling

The growing importance of cycling in Berlin is also reflected in the results of the current “Bicycle Monitor 2023”, published by Federal Ministry of Transport is promoted. According to the study, which surveyed 4,003 citizens, 46 percent of Germans would like to ride a bicycle or Pedelec more often in the future. Pedelecs in particular are very popular, with 48 percent of prospective buyers preferring them.

The cyclists’ sense of safety is crucial. 94 percent feel safe on separate cycle paths, while only 13 percent say they feel safe on shared roads. These statistics highlight the need to further improve cycling infrastructure.

In summary, it can be said that the current renovation work on Königsweg represents a step in the right direction to promote safer driving and the use of bicycles in urban areas. The combination of continuous expansion of the cycling infrastructure and growing interest in bicycles and Pedelecs shows the potential to further strengthen cycling in Berlin.
