New living space for Lichterfelde: Upgrading of Stangenpfuhl starts!
On September 5, 2025, the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district office will announce the upcoming upgrade of the Stangenpfuhl and Stangengraben in Lichterfelde Süd. This construction project officially starts on September 8, 2025. The intervention, which is being carried out by the Parks Department, aims to improve the currently unused and overgrown paths and make the area more attractive for residents. It is particularly emphasized that the place is currently not suitable as a local recreation area because there are no paths or recreational areas.
The project envisages creating a regular trail on the edge of the property above the rain retention basin. In the future, an approximately 3 meter wide path connection will be created, which will be supplemented by a small expansion of the space. Particular attention is paid to the existing trees in order to preserve the natural environment. Root bridges and a well-thought-out elevation of the path should ensure that the majority of the trees remain untouched. The only exception is some necessary tree felling, especially in the area of thin poles that are close together.
Measures and financing
The repair of the existing walls and railings on the outflow structures of the puddle is also part of the planned measures. A new youth space will be built on Osdorfer Straße, equipped with robust seating and a graffiti wall. The entire project is financed through the “Social Cohesion – Construction Fund” program and has a total cost of around 530,000 euros.
The construction work is planned until December 2025. During this time there will be construction noise and other disruptions, but these should be minimized as far as possible. The district council has put the Stangenpfuhl on the list of desirable building projects, which gives the initiative additional momentum.
Importance for quality of life
The upgrading of the Stangenpfuhl is not only an urban development improvement, but also a step towards a diverse urban nature. Such nature protects and promotes urban biodiversity, which in turn has positive effects on the health and well-being of urban populations. In this context, the importance of urban development funding is emphasized, which serves to remedy urban development deficiencies and increase the proportion of urban green space.
The planned biotope maintenance measures are also intended to make the trees sustainable. The path construction work helps to improve the green and open spaces in the district and also gives space for natural regeneration.

The Steglitz-Zehlendorf district office hopes that these measures will mean that the Stangenpfuhl and Stangengraben as a retention basin will in future be perceived as more than just a body of water, but rather as an attractive place for recreation and encounters for local residents. The next few months will show how well the balance between natural design and urban use can be achieved.
