Memory of victims of the Hamas terror: hundreds of people gather in Zehlendorf
On April 7, 2024, almost 400 people gathered in Zehlendorf on Sderotplatz to commemorate the victim of Hamas' victim of the terrorist attack on Israel exactly six months ago. In this attack, more than 1200 people were killed and 240 hostages were kidnapped in the Gaza Strip. The emotional rally was organized by the German-Israeli Society (DIG) Berlin and Brandenburg and aimed to commemorate the victims and also to remember the 130 hostage still in the captivity of Hamas.
The terrorist attack in the Gaza Strip not only had global effects, but also local. In Zehlendorf, a district of Berlin, which has a strong Jewish community, solidarity with the victims and their families was very noticeable. The commemoration attracted people from different parts of the city and showed that the community is united in memory of innocent victims of terrorist files.
Historically, Germany has a special responsibility towards Israel and the Jewish people due to the Holocaust during the Second World War. The relationship between Germany and Israel is close and shaped by efforts to reconcile and support. The Hamas terrorist attack on Israel has brought this connection into focus again and shows the need to tackle terrorism and violence together. In the following table, some facts about the German-Israeli society are listed:
| Foundation year | Number of members | Events per year |
| ————— | ————— | ———————- |
| 1951 | 5000 | 20 |
The German-Israeli society has been committed to a close relationship between Germany and Israel since 1951 and is committed to cultural exchange, education and memory. The commemoration in Zehlendorf was another sign of this engagement and solidarity with the victims of terrorism.
