Stasi murder convicted after 50 years: ex-officer is on trial
In the historical process, the Berlin Regional Court condemned a former Stasi officer for murder. Around 50 years after the fatal shot on 38-year-old Poland Czesław Kukuczka at the GDR border crossing, the 80-year-old received a ten-year imprisonment. The public prosecutor had asked for twelve years.
The ex-lieutenant is said to have been ambushed by Kukuczka in 1974 at the behest of the GDR secret service. The Pole had previously tried to force his departure to West Berlin with a dummy of bomb. West German students accidentally witnessed the crime and reported their fear and bewilderness in the court. A crucial information on the Enlightenment only came from the Stasi documents archive in 2016 when a document specified the identity of the shooter. The indictment for murder was raised in 2023 after the public prosecutor asserted the murder feature of the insidents. For more information, see the current reports on www.radioeuskirchen.de .
